"Interpretations" A Review by Tim
Whitmer
One of the great joys in life is the chance
to hear an artist at the top of her form. In her debut recording, Kansas City
pianist/vocalist Candace Evans invites the listener to take a tour through some
of Americas finest standards. Her unique perspective combined with her
carefully chosen arrangements weaves a tapestry of sound that enthralls,
enchants, and delights in a way that only a talent of this caliber can deliver.
The carefully orchestrated program includes
a colorful rainbow of styles and emotions. Listen to the tenderness of
Candaces solo turn on Rodgers and Harts immortal "It Never
Entered My Mind." Injoy the pleasantly fulfilling Evans-Carol Comer setting of
"We Kiss In A Shadow" with the lilting flute stylings of Bill Crain. Ponder the
mesmerizing colors of guest pianist/arranger Billy Meynier in his canvas of
"Cry Me A River" as Candaces voice coaxes new subtleties out of the text.
Soar with guitarist Rod Fleeman as he ignites "Fly Me To The Moon." Each
musical chestnut shines with energy and exuberance on the up sides balanced by
a sense of seductive sincerity on the introspective ballads. Special mention to
the fine ensemble shadings of such jazz luminaries as Mike Thompson (Drums),
Ricky Anderson and Wes Knowles (Bass), and Gary Helm (Percussion).
Candace Evans has put together a tantalizing
treat of an album, one that we will want to hear and enjoy for a long time.
"Interpretations" is Candace Evans doing what she does best - interpreting the
classics with a strong combination of arrangements, performances, and
programming. She then paints them with her own musical sensibility and a voice
that brings warmth to the heart. Bravo and Encore!!!!
